Why does MC moving-coil head have better quality than MM moving-magnetic head

The device used to play LP is called Turntable (turntable/turntable). The turntable used to pick up sound on the record is mainly divided into MM moving magnetic and MC moving coil in terms of structure. The playing principle of turntable depends on the stylus tracking in the V-shaped grooves of the turntable, recording the music texture on both sides, and sending the vibration generated by friction back to the magnetic circuit system inside the Phono head by the stylus, and then generating the output current of magneto-electric conversion, which is then restored through the equalization (RIAA equalization) circuit of Phono head amplifier. And a high rate of amplification line into voltage, and then output to the former power amplifier for signal amplification, and finally through the speaker to play music. As the whole process of vinyl replay works in a pure analog circuit state, the sound quality is closer to the listening habits of music fans, and the sound quality and emotional outpouring are more pure.

MM is short for Moving Magnet, and MC is short for Moving Coil. Due to the reasons of design and structure, the end of the stylus of MM moving magnetic phono head is connected with a magnet, and the coil of induction current is installed in the phono head shell. Relatively speaking, the coil can be made relatively large, so the output voltage is relatively high. High-quality MM head also has its own advantages, such as the head has better flexibility, its track ability is higher than the general MC head, this is because the weight of the magnet at the end of the needle rod is much lower than the induction current coil, so you can use a larger coil output high level, but not to bring too much load to the stylus.

MC head is just the opposite, the end of the stylus is burdened by the coil, the magnet is installed in the shell, in order to improve the tracking ability of the stylus in the record pit, the coil can not be too large (to achieve a balance between the vibration quality and output level), if the number of winding may make the needle load is larger, so that it may affect the sensitivity of the needle. Because of this, the action of the stylus rod directly acts on the coil, so MC moving-coil phono head is obviously more sensitive to the action of tiny vibration. Although the output level is low, the details are richer than MM phono head, the high frequency extension is better, and the microdynamic is more flexible. Looking at the design indicators of most of the market, the output voltage of MM moving magnetic head is about 3.5-6mV (millivolt), while the MC moving coil is usually only between 0.3-0.5mV, and even many low output head only about 0.25mV output.

With the development of technology, a number of high output MC heads appeared on the market, the output voltage is comparable to MM heads. What good does that do? Generally speaking, the output voltage of the moving coil phono head is much lower than that of the moving magnetic phono head, so the general power player, especially AV power amplifier does not set the input of the MC phono head, often need to add another phono amplifier or boost transformer. MM and high output MC heads do not need to use additional high gain MC playback, so the signal-to-noise ratio that affects noise and sound details, as well as the distortion ratio, will be better than the other MC heads in the same category, making it easier to produce good sound.
